Black Dog Spinnaker we made recently on an O’Day Dolphin
Mt. Vernon Chase Race May 9 , 2026. From the Skipper “This was Black Dog’s first ever spinnaker race. In fact, this was the first time that Black Dog has ever even attempted to fly a spinnaker since 1965. That was in the last century. And I don’t think she ever flew one back then, or ever. She is a very tender boat. It doesn’t take a lot of breeze to put her rail down and bring water aboard even with small sails. After the slow tack after tack after tack trip upwind to the Mt. Vernon marker, we rounded it and headed home downwind. Up went the spinnaker, despite some initial concerns about gusts.
At first the winds were light and right behind us. The spinnaker had a nice strong pull. We jibed her fairly easily and kept on keeping on. It was an exquisite moment for me. I was bursting with pride and excitement. Then, out of the west, suddenly, a freaking horrendous 21-knot gust appeared. It knocked the boat flat over on its beam with the boom in the water and the spinnaker sinking under water. This is called a “broach” in sailing language. This was the broach from Hell.”

Correct, but if you plan now, we can do prep work (measuring, patterning,etc.) and do the project this coming winter, Here’s the thing – so many people put their boat away in the fall and then come spring, want work done ASAP. We typically run a backlog and that leads to disappointment.

Allows panels to go over bows, prevents crystal destruction by flagging and excessive bending and provides needed cooling. We changed the design to eliminate the Velcro flaps and use snaps.
